Typically a corporation has shareholders that own a percentage of the organization.  A nonprofit corporation has no shareholders and no owners.  The equivalent of a shareholder is a member.  Members fulfill the role typically done by shareholders.  The Board of Directors serves the members, a position on the Board must be approved by the members and does not confer “membership” status.
